India surpasses Australia in the Test rankings due to an ICC website error that is later fixed

It appears that the International Cricket Council (ICC) made a significant rating error. Following the formal announcement of Rohit Sharma's team as the No. 1 team across all three format categories — Tests, ODIs, and T20Is — on Wednesday afternoon, India dropped to No. 2 in Tests, with Australia at the top of the leaderboard.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials are not amused by the abrupt change in ranking status, and it has not gone over well with them. According to a BCCI executive, "Either they have made a huge error or they have jumped the gun, and neither is funny."

It is almost inevitable that India will surpass Australia in the Test rankings given their current 1-0 lead in their four-match series against Australia, but the ICC appears to have acted prematurely.

India was ranked first in the Tests rankings on Wednesday afternoon with a rating of 115, followed by Australia at 111, which was four points lower. The following three places were held by England (106), New Zealand (100), and South Africa (85).

India continues to have 115 rating points in the current rankings, whereas Australia has 126. The ICC said that the issue was a technological one. India was mistakenly listed as the No. 1 Test team on the ICC website for a brief period of time due to a technical error, which has already been fixed. ICC's digital division in its Dubai office is rumored to have made the arithmetic error.

India continues to lead in the other two forms, ODIs and T20Is, with the Men in Blue trailing world champions England (266) by just one point in T20Is. In the ODIs, India (114) leads Australia (112) by two points.
