Post WC debacle, BCCI opts for selection committee shakeup

Annual General Meeting last month, when there was talk of a senior selection committee overhaul. He stated, "How can it happen, if India win the World Cup?"India did not win the World Cup, and the performance of the selection committee is now being viewed as subpar.Evidently, the BCCI had no less of an expectation. In addition, the team selected by this committee did not perform well at the previous World Cup.

Even though the BCCI has decided to do a good job of reorganizing the panel by firing all five selectors, technically their contracts haven't been renewed. The BCCI stated that their performance would be evaluated annually when these selectors were appointed.

In a December 24, 2020 release announcing the appointment of three new selectors - Chetan Sharma, Abey Kuruvilla, and Debasis Mohanty - who joined Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh in the five-member panel, the BCCI stated, "The CAC will review the candidates and make the recommendations to the BCCI."

Although the BCCI has made it abundantly clear that it is in need of five new selectors, neither the CAC nor the BCCI office-bearers have commented on whether the performance has been evaluated. Interestingly, the BCCI had issued the media release at the same time that a meeting of the selection committee was taking place.

The qualified applicants have until November 28 to apply for the positions, and the new committee should be in place by mid-December. This means that Chetan Sharma and three other selectors, Joshi, Mohanty, and Singh, will be on leave for close to a month.

"No person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee (as defined in the BCCI's rules and regulations) for a total of five years shall be eligible to be a member of the Men's Selection Committee," the BCCI stated. Mohanty has served on the junior selection committee for two years, so he has served four of the five years he is entitled to on a cricket panel. Joshi and Singh have served as selectors for 32 months, and chairman Chetan Sharma will not even serve for two full years before being forced to step down. All of them are leaving too soon.

Since Sourav Ganguly failed to win a second term at the AGM last month, the new BCCI administration has been considering a fresh start. In this sense, the removal of the selection committee appears to be part of the plan of the Roger Binny-Jay Shah-led BCCI, which wants no problems at the 2023 World Cup that India will host.

The conspicuous inquiry currently is who will come in. At the point when Sunil Joshi supplanted MSK Prasad as the director in Walk 2020, being a choice of Ganguly was thought.

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), which was led by N Srinivasan at the time, desired L Sivaramakrishnan. It will be interesting to see if Srinivasan and TNCA still support Sivaramakrishnan, but if he applies, he may be a strong South Zone candidate. Because president Binny is from the South Zone, he might also have some thoughts.

The name Salil Ankola has been mentioned numerous times from the West Zone.If the strongman of Mumbai cricket, treasurer Ashish Shelar, supports the former India pacer, he will be favored. Last time, the East Zone's SS Das of Odisha made the cut, but it's important to note who applies from Bengal.Vice President Rajeev Shukla may have a say in the Central Zone candidate, but the North Zone candidates' quality will play a significant role. Numerous options are available thanks to the 30 first-class matches criteria.

For the record, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will select the selectors once more, with a recast anticipated soon. Before selecting the new selection committee, a lot of selection work needs to be done.
