Taskin Ahmeds burst helped Bangladesh defeat Ireland by 22 runs

In a rain-affected first T20I on Monday in Chittagong, Bangladesh defeated Ireland by 22 runs after Taskin Ahmed took three wickets in an over. Before rain halted the game for over an hour and forced officials to set Ireland a revised target of 104 runs in eight overs, Bangladesh completed their innings in 19.2 overs. Despite a strong start to their run chase with 18 runs scored in the first over, Ireland ended with 81-5.

Taskin's three-wicket burst in the fourth over forced the visitors to slow down, and he claimed another wicket in the final over to finish with 4-16, his best T20I score of his career.

Gareth Delany top-scored for Ireland and was unbeaten on 21.

Prior Rony Talukdar struck a profession best 67 from 38 balls to drive Bangladesh after substitute Ireland captain Paul Stirling won the throw and chose for bowl.

In an opening stand with Litton Das, Rony scored 91 runs in seven overs and hit 47 off 23 balls.

Najmul Hossain was stumped for 14 by Harry Tector shortly after Craig Young forced Litton to hole out to Stirling at mid-off, breaking the stand.

After Graham Hume bowled Rony, who scored his first T20I fifty with seven fours and three sixes, Ireland hoped to halt Bangladesh's scoring spree.

Shakib Al Hasan's 20 not out off 13 balls and Shamim Hossain's 30-ball 30 helped Bangladesh surpass the 200-run mark before rain brought an early end.

Right-arm pacer Youthful asserted 2-45 for Ireland.

Bangladesh played Ireland for the first time in a T20I at home, with regular skipper Andrew Balbirnie out for the three-match series.

On Wednesday, the second match will take place at the same venue.

Bangladesh won the former three-match ODI series 2-0. In the beginning of April, the teams will meet for a one-time test.
